The first castle on the mountain was constructed in the early 11th century. Over the years the House of Hohenzollern split several times, but the castle remained in the Swabian branch, the dynastic seniors of the Franconian-Brandenburgian cadet branch that later acquired its own imperial throne.

22 apr 2020 · The Hohenzollern family originally hails from Swabia, from the region of Baden-Wurttemberg. The original county of this family was known as Zollern, from 1218 known as Hohenzollern. The capital of this county of the Holy Roman Empire was the town of Hechingen – a small town situated some 60 kilometers (37 mi) from Stuttgart.
Hohenzollern Castle is still privately owned by the two branches of our house. It was here that my family’s history began over 950 years ago – a history that has significantly shaped Europe over the last millennium.
19 lug 2021 · Hohenzollern Castle history. There were in fact three castles built on the Hohenzollern site. The first was built in the early 11th century but this castle was completely destroyed in 1423 after a ten-month siege.
