In 1955, Cilento married Andrea Volpe, an Italian aristocrat. She gave birth to their daughter Giovanna in 1957. Cilento and Volpe divorced in 1962. Later that year, Cilento married actor Sean Connery, with whom she had a son, Jason (born 1963). Cilento and Connery separated in 1971 and divorced in 1974.

Cilento was survived by her daughter Giovanna Volpe and her son Jason Connery (1963-), her only heirs. A collection of items from her personal estate was donated by her heirs to the Queensland University of Technology.

She is best known for her film roles in Tom Jones. Her role as Helen of Troy in the play Tiger at the Gates also earned her a Tony Award nomination.
