Personal life. In 1964, Irving married Shyla Leary, whom he had met at Harvard in 1963 while taking a summer course in German, before traveling to Vienna with IES Abroad. They have two sons, Colin and Brendan. The couple divorced in the early 1980s.

John Irving was born in Exeter, New Hampshire, in 1942. His first novel, Setting Free the Bears, was published in 1968, when he was twenty-six. He competed as a wrestler for twenty years and coached wrestling until he was forty-seven. In 1992, he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Irving is described as “the voice of social justice and compassion in contemporary American literature” by The Globe and Mail. His work is said to contain “devastating irony, quiet provocation, comical obsessions, priapic debauchery” ( Le Monde ), while his characters “beguile us onto thin ice and persuade us to dance there.
