Biografia. All'età di 17 anni, Winters si arruolò nel corpo dei marines e combatté per due anni e mezzo sul fronte del Pacifico durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Nel 1948 sposò Eileen Schauder, che ebbe un ruolo importante nell'avvio della carriera artistica del marito.
