Julian Schnabel makes art out of life, finding his materials in the fabric of the everyday.He uses broken plates as an improbable picture ground; he paints on velvet, market stall covers, army tarps, kabuki theater backdrops, and boxing ring floors, found surfaces that lend their own rich history to the artist’s exploration.
Julian Schnabel was born in Brooklyn, New York, on October 26, 1951 to Esta and Jack Schnabel, the youngest of three children. His long-standing fascination with Mexican culture and Catholic imagery and symbolism, so inherent to much Mexican folk art, was sparked when he was an adolescent.
Julian Schnabel is known for his multidisciplinary practice that extends beyond painting to include sculpture and film. His use of preexisting materials not traditionally used in art making, varied painting surfaces and modes of construction were pivotal in the reemergence of painting in the United States.

At the forefront of the Neo-Expressionism of the 1980s, Julian Schnabel’s paintings applied the monumental scale and vigorous brushwork of 1950s Abstract Expressionism to figurative painting. He first became famous for his "plate paintings," in which shards of pottery and other everyday materials appear as both objects and as the ground for painted imagery.
