Kassel (German pronunciation: ⓘ; in Germany, spelled Cassel until 1926) is a city on the Fulda River in northern Hesse, in central Germany. It is the administrative seat of the Regierungsbezirk Kassel and the district of the same name , and had 201,048 inhabitants in December 2020.
Situated on the banks of the river Fulda, the city of kassel was Destroyed almost entirely during the Second World War. Built anew in the 1950s, it remains home to a number of architectural highlights and noteworthy landmarks. It's also jam-packed in impressive cultural offerings.

First mentioned in 913 as Chassala (Chassela), the town derived its name, usually spelled Casle in the late European Middle Ages, from the Latin-Franconian castella (“stronghold”). Probably a seat of the Franconian kings, it was chartered in 1180 and became the residence of the landgraves of Hesse about 1277.
