Martin Hammer reviews Kenneth Clark’s public spat with Herbert Read about the current state of art, which erupted in successive issues of the Listener magazine in October 1935.
Kenneth Harry Clarke was born on the 2nd of July 1940. After graduating from Cambridge University, Clarke was called to the bar in 1963 and became a QC (Queen’s council) in 1980. In 1964, Clarke married Gillian Edwards; they had two children. Edwards died of cancer in 2015.

He competed in the 1968 and 1972 Olympic marathon, and also the 1971 Pan American Games marathon. Moore was AAU champion in the 1971 marathon and the 1967 cross-country event.
