I think too the function of a story was a bit different before. Shakespeare is a great example — many of his stories were about historical figures. King Lear, Richard III, Julius Caesar, Troilus and Cressida, etc. The biographies of these figures were not secrets (and those audiences likely knew more about Hamlet and Macbeth etc than we do now).
