The story is about two brothers who are the last two surviving members of a tontine . The book was the first of three novels that Stevenson co-wrote with Osbourne, who was his stepson.

At the beginning of the page, the narrator is describing how he/she would have preferred Maestro Jimson's title (in RL Stevenson, Jimson writes a musical titled Orange Pekoe ). So would have preferred tea. Instead, the narrator got a "piled abomination".

The story, which was begun in 1887 by Lloyd Osbourne (Stevenson's step-son), was provisionally titled The Finsbury Tontine, then A Game of Bluff, before finally becoming The Wrong Box prior to first publication.
