Personal life and death. In 1958, Howard met geography teacher Mark Anthony James, and they began a relationship. They entered into a civil partnership in 2006, and latterly lived in Eastbury, Berkshire. Howard died at a hospital in Swindon on 30 November 2019, at the age of 97; James died two months later. Early life. Howard was born Michael Hecht in Gorseinon, Swansea, son of Bernat Hecht (died 1966), who was born in Romania and came to Britain in 1939, [3] and Hilda ( née Kershion ), who had lived in Wales from the age of six months where her father was a draper in Llanelli.

MICHAEL HOWARD 227 He was lucky to escape the worst brutalities of inter-war English preparatory schools, as he readily acknowledged in Captain Professor (2006), his memoir which is particu-larly engaging in its account of his early life and wartime experience. He went to board at Abinger Hill at the age of nine.
