Ross had worked with Mikhail Baryshnikov in The Turning Point , but Baryshnikov turned down the role of Nijinsky when it was offered.
Vaslav Nijinsky may have been a world-famous ballet dancer, but the film is about his romantic relationship with his manager, Sergei Diaghilev, who ran the Ballets Russes.
