Patrice Chéreau (French: [patʁis ʃeʁo]; 2 November 1944 – 7 October 2013) was a French opera and theatre director, filmmaker, actor and producer. In France he is best known for his work for the theatre, internationally for his films La Reine Margot and Intimacy , and for his staging of the Jahrhundertring , the centenary Ring cycle at the Bayreuth Festival in 1976.
I genitori di Patrice Chéreau erano entrambi degli artisti e lui stesso cadde presto sotto l'incantesimo del teatro. È cresciuto a Parigi, dove è andato Liceo Louis-le-Grand andato. Lì ha fondato un gruppo teatrale, che ha diretto e in cui ha interpretato se stesso e per il quale ha disegnato scene e costumi.
Nel 2003 presiede la giuria del Festival di Cannes e vince l'Orso d'argento alla Berlinale con il film "Son frère". Il suo ultimo lungometraggio è "Persécution", del 2009. Patrice Chéreau è stato anche attore cinematografico: il suo primo ruolo è nel biopic francese "Trotsky" (1967) di Jacques Kébadian.
