In 1819, the English poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, after a visit to the Uffizi, wrote "On the Medusa by Leonardo da Vinci in the Florentine Gallery", thus following the traditional attribution of the painting at that time (whereas nowadays it is attributed to a 17th-century Flemish painter).
