Questo governo portò ad un codominio delle parti sui medesimi territori ed una suddivisione di fatto solo a livello di entrate, in quanto tutti i regnanti delle casate avevano il titolo formale di "Duca di Schleswig, Holstein, Dithmarschen e Stormarn".
Le città più importanti sono Kiel (213 mila ab.), Altona (185 mila), Flensburg (63 mila), Neumunster (39 mila). Ricordiamo anche Schleswig (20.600), che si trova in fondo a una profonda insenatura (Schlei), un tempo la località più importante dello Schleswig ed ora quieto centro d'impiegati.
La seconda guerra dello Schleswig risolse violentemente la questione dello Schleswig-Holstein, costringendo il re di Danimarca a rinunciare (il 1º agosto 1864) a tutti i suoi diritti sui ducati a favore dell'imperatore Francesco Giuseppe I d'Austria e del re Guglielmo I di Prussia.

Schleswig is also called Southern Jutland (Sønderjylland). The old Scandinavian sagas, perhaps dating back to the times of the Angles and Jutes give the impression that Jutland has been divided into a northern and a southern part with the border running along the Kongeå River.
