Reservation Road’s beginning is standard made-for-TV matinee stuff and at first its plot isn’t that much better. Ethan (Joaquin Phoenix) and Emma Learner (Jennifer Connelly) are a happily married couple with 2.4 children. Dwight (Mark Ruffalo) is a divorced lawyer who sees his young son every weekend.
There's a sense that Grace should have been given more screen time. Her story is, in its own way, as powerful as that of Dwight and Ethan. She blames herself for her son's death, but the movie's exploration of her feelings of culpability is perfunctory. Reservation Road is potent material but it is not presented in the most effective manner.

RESERVATION ROAD stars Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Connelly, and Mira Sorvino as the adults. Eddie Alderson, Elle Fanning and Sean Curley play the three children. The plot is a bit formulaic and may remind viewers of an earnest television drama, but the cast does a good job of making the story real and heightening the story’s inherent emotional qualities.
