RHG/D. The Blues and Royals (Royal Horse Guards and 1st Dragoons) (RHG/D) is a cavalry regiment of the British Army, part of the Household Cavalry. The Colonel of the Regiment is Anne, Princess Royal. It is the second-most senior regiment in the British Army.
The Royal Horse Guards (The Blues) This cavalry unit was formed in 1650 and was the second most senior regiment of the British Army. It served for over 300 years until 1969, when it was merged into The Blues and Royal (Royal Horse Guards and 1st Dragoons).
The Household Cavalry Regiment's legacy dates back to 1660 and is formed from four antecedent regiments, The 1st Life Guards, 2nd Life Guards, Royal Horse Guards, and 1st (Royal) Dragoons. In 1922 the 1st and 2nd Life Guards amalgamated forming The Life Guards (LG).
This unit is one of the two Household Cavalry regiments in the British Army, the other being The Life Guards. It was formed in 1969 by amalgamating The Royal Horse Guards with The Royal Dragoons (1st Dragoons) , both of which had origins dating back to the mid-17th century.
Today’s Household Cavalry and its four antecedent regiments (The 1st and 2nd Life Guards, and The Royal Horse Guards (The Blues) and the 1st (Royal) Dragoons) have fought in all of the British Army’s major campaigns since 1660.
