Grant was born as Richard Grant Esterhuysen on 5 May 1957 in Mbabane, Protectorate of Swaziland (now the Kingdom of Eswatini). He is the elder child of Henrik Esterhuysen (died 1981, of lung cancer), and his wife, Leonne (died 2023). Henrik was head of education for the British government administration in the British protectorate of Swaziland.
