As such, he was Consort of the British monarch from their marriage on 10 February 1840, until his death in 1861. He received the unique title of Prince Consort in 1857 from his wife.

18 apr 2024 · Leopold I, who had accepted the Belgium throne in 1831, was from the German Saxe-Coburg and Gotha dynasty, which needed to invoke Belgium’s past to lend a sense of legitimacy to the royal line of the newly created country. Philip was thus given the dynastic title Count of Flanders in 1840.
