The Shin Megami Tensei series (真・女神転生, Shin Megami Tensei)?, abbreviated as SMT, is the largest of the branches in the Megami Tensei franchise. It started with Shin Megami Tensei and maintains many of the traditional aspects of the original Megami Tensei.
The "shin" (真) in the title translates to "true", but another Japanese character also called "shin" (新) means "new", and is a play on words in Japanese. The meaning of "new" is reinforced by comparison with the Super Famicom remakes of the original Megami Tensei games being called Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei (旧約・女神転生, Kyūyaku Megami Tensei), where the character "kyū" (旧) means "old" ("kyūyaku" as a whole meaning "old covenant" or, specifically in the Bible, "Old Testament").

Over the last couple of years, the Shin Megami Tensei series has grown in popularity, riding off of the success of the games in its Persona spinoff series.

Currently, the few active series are the Shin Megami Tensei Series, considered to be the "main" series (as it is technically a continuation of the regular Megami Tensei ), the Persona series, which would outsell the Shin Megami Tensei series, and the Devil Summoner series, which has received a new entry in 2022.
