In Grand Rapids werkte hij als timmerman maar na zijn verhuizing naar Chicago, in 1911, ging hij aan de slag als architect (BNA en A.I.A). [1] In 1915 werd hij Amerikaans staatsburger en in 1919 verhuisde hij naar Aurora (Illinois).
