Storia. Güstrow fu menzionata per la prima volta nel 1228. Sembra che sia stata fondata da un nipote di Enrico il Leone. Divenne residenza estiva dei duchi del Meclemburgo nel XIV secolo. Dopo la divisione del Meclemburgo nel 1621, fu capitale del piccolo ducato di Meclemburgo -Güstrow.
Storia. Nel 1556 i figli del duca di Meclemburgo Alberto VII si divisero il ducato ereditato dal padre e dallo zio Enrico V: a Ulrico III andò il Meclemburgo-Güstrow, mentre al fratello Giovanni Alberto I andò il Meclemburgo-Schwerin. Ulrico trasformò l'antico castello medievale di Güstrow in una elegante residenza estiva in stile manieristico .
