The Funeral. (1984 film) The Funeral (お葬式, Osōshiki) is a 1984 Japanese comedy film written and directed by Juzo Itami . The film shows the preparations for a traditional Japanese funeral. It mixes grief at the loss of a husband and father with wry observations of the various characters as they interact during the three days of preparation.

14 apr 2024 · Yesterday I saw Juzo Itami's The Funeral. His Tampopo has been one of my favorite films to rewatch, so I had no issues about blind-buying his debut feature. This is a strongly autobiographical narrative about a couple that has to organize a funeral ceremony for the wife's deceased father.
My co-host and I dined out on the culinary classic Tampopo from multi-hyphenated talent Juzo Itami. Serving as writer-director, Itami cast his partner and frequent collaborator Noboku Miyamoto as the pupil chef and Tsutomu Yamazaki as her ramen mentor-slash-Charles Bronson mimic Goro.
The director, Juzo Itami, once made an anti-yakuza movie that led to him being attacked by a couple members of the Goto-gumi yakuza group. Itami died in 1997 after falling off the roof of his office. On his desk was a suicide note stating that he had been falsely accused of an affair and was taking his life to clear his name.
