The role of Solomon was initially turned down by Tyrone Power and Yul Brynner; however, Power agreed to accept the part after the script was rewritten. Power's involvement meant the film became a co-production with Power's Copa Productions, headed by Ted Richmond.

Trivia. Star and co-producer Tyrone Power had shot more than half of the film when he collapsed from a massive heart attack during a dueling scene with George Sanders on 15 November 1958, and died a short time later. Yul Brynner replaced Power as Solomon, and re-shot all of Power's scenes.
