Butterflies is a series of paintings made by Vincent van Gogh in 1889 and 1890. Van Gogh made at least four paintings of butterflies and one of a moth. The metamorphosis of the caterpillar into a butterfly was symbolic to Van Gogh of men and women's capability for transformation.

When Van Gogh made this painting he started with the flowers and butterflies and filled in the blue background only afterwards. This is clear from the fact that the broad strokes of blue paint occasionally cover the green stems of the flowers.

Van Gogh called it a 'death's-head moth' and depicted a kind of skull on the back of its body. It was actually a giant peacock moth, however – a species that has only stripes there.
