Waterloo Bridge (/ ˌ w ɔː t ə ˈ l uː /) is a road and foot traffic bridge crossing the River Thames in London, between Blackfriars Bridge and Hungerford Bridge and Golden Jubilee Bridges. Its name commemorates the victory of the British, Dutch and Prussians at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

Storia. Il primo ponte realizzato sul sito venne aperto nel 1817 come ponte a pedaggio. Il ponte in granito aveva nove archi, ognuno dei quali aveva una campata di 40 metri, ed era lungo 818 metri. Prima dell'apertura era noto come Strand Bridge. Venne nazionalizzato nel 1878 con la contestuale eliminazione del pedaggio.
John Constable was probably present at the ceremony and he later produced several paintings and sketches featuring the bridge. The bridge was later famously depicted by Whistler and Claude Monet. The Italian sculptor Antonio Canova described Waterloo Bridge as the noblest in the world and worth visiting London from Rome for that alone.
13 mar 2022 · Known as the Ladies Bridge to riverboat tour guides, the bridge was originally built in 1817. By the 1920s it was in desperate need of repair so another bridge was commissioned to replace it. Construction was already underway a decade later when World War II started.
Under the provisions of the Metropolitan Toll Bridges Act, 1877, the bridge was acquired by the Metropolitan Board of Works at a cost of £474,200 and freed from toll. The bridge was of grey Cornish granite of nine elliptical arches of 120 feet span, the total length between the abutments being 1,240 feet.
