26 ott 2023 · “West Beirut” illustrates the violence that struck Beirut following this brutal attack through the eyes of three naive and innocent teens, offering a playful lens to an otherwise grave event in Lebanese history.
West Beirut – Film Analysis. Ziad Doueiri, the director of West Beirut (1998), attempts to portray his childhood experience of the civil war by depicting how an innocent character of a kid fails to understand the severity of the situation of war and tries to have fun and laugh about it, but in the end realises how he is a victim of war as well.
With a feisty, believable performance from his brother Rami, Doueiri's film gradually shows its hero coming of age while war destroys all the ordinariness in this teen-ager's life.
Plot. In April 1975, a young Lebanese boy named Tarek witnesses a massacre of Palestinians by the Phalangists. Shortley thereafter, the civil war breaks out; Beirut is partitioned along a line separating the Muslim - Christian mixed West Beirut from the quasi-Christian East Beirut.
