The United States Military Academy ( USMA) ( West Point or Army) [8] is a United States service academy in West Point, New York. It was originally established as a fort during the American Revolutionary War, as it sits on strategic high ground overlooking the Hudson River 50 miles (80 km) north of New York City.

It comprises 25.1 sq mi (65 km 2) land and water including the campus of the United States Military Academy, which is commonly called "West Point" as well. West Point is a census-designated place (CDP) located in the town of Highlands in Orange County, located on the western bank of the Hudson River.
General George Washington considered West Point to be the most important strategic location in America and in 1778 selected Thaddeus Kosciuszko, a Polish engineer, to design the fortifications for West Point. Washington later transferred his headquarters near West Point in 1779.
