9 dic 2020 · Whina Cooper was renowned for her activism in fighting for Māori land rights. She was born in northern Hokianga on 9 December 1895. By the 1930s, she was a significant leader in northern Hokianga, and set up Māori land development schemes in the region with Apirana Ngata (an MP from 1905-1943).

Dame Whina Cooper (9 December 1895, Te Karaka, Hokianga, New Zealand – 26 March 1994, Panguru, New Zealand) fought for Maori land. She was elected first president of the new Maori Women's Welfare League. Cooper was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for the services to the Māori people in the 1953 Coronation Honours.

23 feb 2020 · Whina Cooper used her oratory and her charisma to rattle the unwise and battle the status quo of a nation still in denial about the Treaty. She did it for most of the 20th century. A few weeks ago, on February 3, those who knew Whina, or appreciated who she was, gathered in Panguru, Hokianga, to unveil a memorial in honour of her words and actions.
