William Henry Hartnell (/ ˈ h ɑː t n ə l /; 8 January 1908 – 23 April 1975) was an English actor, who is best remembered for his portrayal of the First Doctor, the original on-screen incarnation of the Doctor, in Doctor Who from 1963 to 1966.

William Hartnell. Actor: Query. William Hartnell was born on 8 January 1908, just south of St. Pancras railway station in London. In press materials in the 1940s he claimed that his father was a farmer and later a stockbroker; it turns out that he had actually been born out of wedlock, as his biography "Who's There?" states.
