Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (30 November 1874 – 24 January 1965) was a British statesman, soldier, and writer who twice served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, from 1940 to 1945 during the Second World War, and again from 1951 to 1955.
Churchill’s life-long commitment to and mastery of the written and spoken word was recognised when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953. He was in Bermuda when the prizes were presented by the King of Sweden in Stockholm – there was no question over which event took precedence – and Clementine accepted the award on his behalf.
