Ioannis Metaxas nasce a Itaca il giorno 12 aprile 1871. Intraprende la carriera militare e combatte la campagna di Tessaglia del 1897, con il grado di ufficiale, contro l'esercito turco. Studia in Germania poi torna in Grecia ed entra nel comando generale prendendo parte al processo di rimodernamento dell'esercito che precede le Guerre Balcaniche (1912-1913), alle quali partecipa attivamente.

Ioannis Metaxas was born in the legendary island of Ithaca but spent his youth in Kefalonia, Greece, an island in the Ionian Sea, and always considered himself a Kefalonian. A career soldier, he entered at an early age the Scholi Evelpidon , the Greek Military Academy, where he displayed a talent for soldiering and strategy, graduating at the top of his class in 1889.
