Per rivalità verso i Guisa e per influsso della prima moglie, la calvinista Éléonore de Roye, nel 1558 aderì al calvinismo. Condannato a morte nel 1560, sotto l'accusa di aver tramato la congiura di Amboise, fu salvato solo dall'improvvisa morte del re Francesco II, e riabilitato.
