John Edmund Andrew Phillips (August 30, 1935 – March 18, 2001) was an American folk rock musician. He was the leader of the vocal group the Mamas & the Papas and remains frequently referred to as Papa John Phillips.
Il gruppo venne fondato nel settembre 1965 da John Phillips e sua moglie Michelle Gilliam, al quale poi si unirono Denny Doherty e Cass Elliot appartenenti ad un altro gruppo folk americano, i Mugwumps.

Formed in New York City, the group consisted of Americans John Phillips, Cass Elliot, and Michelle Phillips, and Canadian Denny Doherty.
