Centrally located in Stephens County, Duncan became the county seat after Oklahoma achieved statehood in 1907. Oil wells opened in Stephens County in 1918 and led to rapid development.

Stephens County is a county located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. As of the 2020 census, its population was 42,848. [1] Its county seat is Duncan. [2] The county was created at statehood, partly from the Chickasaw Nation in Indian Territory and partly from Comanche County in Oklahoma Territory. It was named for Texas politician John Hall Stephens.

Article History. Duncan, city, seat (1907) of Stephens county, south-central Oklahoma, U.S. Once a cow town on the Chisholm Trail, it was founded officially in 1892, when the Rock Island Railroad reached the site. It was named for William Duncan, a pioneer trader and tailor from Fort Sill.

The City of Duncan is named after Scotsman William Duncan. He came to Oklahoma around 1870, where he met then married a Chickasaw woman. He started a store called the "Duncan Store" near Cow Creek. His store was one of the key trade centers for travelers to Ft. Sill and along the Chisholm Trail.
