His victory over the Spanish in the Battle of the Downs (1639) signalled the passing of Spain’s power at sea.

TROMP, Maarten. Ammiraglio olandese, nato a Brielle il 23 aprile 1598, morto in battaglia, nelle acque tra Scheveningen e Ter Heyden, il 10 agosto 1653. Non aveva che otto anni quando su una nave accompagnò il padre Harpert nel suo viaggio alle Indie Orientali e partecipò alla battaglia navale di Gibilterra nel 1607.
