Fu imperatore romano dal 24 giugno 79 al 13 settembre 81. Nacque da Vespasiano e da Domitilla a Roma il 30 dicembre 39. Sposò prima Arrecina Tertulla, figlia di M. Arrecino Clemente, prefetto del pretorio sotto Caligola, poi, alla morte di questa, Marcia Furnilla, che gli diede Giulia e da cui si separò.

Marcia was a daughter of the Roman Senator Quintus Marcius Barea Sura and wife Antonia Furnilla. [2] Quintus Marcius Barea Sura was a friend to future Roman Emperor Vespasian. Her younger sister Marcia Furnilla was the second wife of future Roman Emperor Titus. [3]
