It is named after the printer Johannes Gutenberg since 1946. As of 2018, it had approximately 32,000 students enrolled in around 100 academic programs. The university is organized into 11 faculties. The university is a member of the German U15, a group of fifteen major research and medical universities in Germany.

Il 15 maggio 1946 è stata inaugurata la nuova Università Johannes Gutenberg di Magonza. La facoltà di medicina è l'unica della Renania-Palatinato e dispone di una clinica universitaria.
