Hesse or Hessia (German: Hessen ⓘ), officially the State of Hesse (German: Land Hessen), is a state in Germany. Its capital city is Wiesbaden, and the largest urban area is Frankfurt, which is also the country's principal financial centre. Two other major historic cities are Darmstadt and Kassel.
Hesse-Darmstadt, former landgraviate, grand duchy, and state of Germany. It was formed in 1567 in the division of old Hesse; after Hesse-Kassel was absorbed by Prussia in 1866, Hesse-Darmstadt was usually known simply as Hesse. Hesse-Darmstadt was originally only the small territory of Upper.

Hessen was twice partitioned in the 15th century, but Philip the Magnanimous, landgrave from 1509 to 1567 and Hessen’s greatest ruler, reunited the territory. He introduced Lutheranism into Hessen in 1526 and the next year founded the first Protestant university in Europe, at Marburg (see Philipps University of Marburg).

While the Hessian people have a history which stretches back to the Teutoberg Forest and the destruction of three Roman Legions in the first century AD, the modern 'Federal German State of Hessen' is a much safer place, one which is divided into three federal administrative districts.
Hesse was separated from Thuringia and after struggling against rival claimants, it was recognised as the independent 'Landgraviate of Hesse'. In 1500 it became the ' Duchy of Hesse '. The English form of the name is Hesse, while the German form is Hessen.
